I Kind Of Know What I'm Doing
December 10 I got a job offer. I had been revamping my own resume (which is what triggered my friend wanting help with his) & sending it out all over town, since mid-October. I was applying for two kinds of jobs mainly: entry level social work jobs, and startup jobs. My professional background is mainly in customer service so the social work jobs yielded zero interested responses, but when I started applying to NYC startups, much like in February & March before I moved here, I was considered a very attractive candidate and got some calls.
One particular company, that was on the top of my employer wish-list actually emailed me an hour after submitting my resume. The interview process was completely varied and included a webcam recorded 3 minute interview, some online tests (typing speed, judgement questions, customer service questions, and questions on the product the company builds), and in person interviews at their cool Soho office. Overall the entire process took maybe 3 weeks, and I got an awesome job offer to start training January 6!
In other news, I left my previous job at Apple this week to enjoy a little winter break of sorts. My best friend is coming into town from Seattle next week, and I couldn't be more excited to have all the time to spend with her.
Also on my plate is roller derby with the Long Island Roller Rebels. I got accepted as an actual transfer rather than "fresh meat" , so my standing in the league is immediately higher. Lower dues, better choice of committee, and to be honest the first night I was an actual transfer rather than a weird in-between, I felt much more included by the other existing (not new) skaters. It's a great feeling to have that sisterhood back. I've been without it since I left Houston Roller Derby in April.
All in all, I'm getting this New York thing figured out.
